Vox Pastoris Policies: Sacramental Preparation
Sacramental preparation in the Vox Pastoris Atrium is conducted in accordance with the "Rome Model" of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. In the fall of the second year of the Level II atrium, children are asked to consider whether they would like to prepare for First Reconciliation and First Communion during the following spring. Those children who do express an interest will have a discussion with their parents and their catechists to discern readiness. Apart from the regular atrium sessions, sacramental preparation consists of five special meditations and a four-day retreat, which culminates in the reception of the sacraments. The sacraments are administered by a priest under the authority of a local pastor.
The practice of deferring the question of sacramental preparation until the second year of Level II allows ample time for children to internalize the new themes and materials presented in the Level II atrium, which will enable more fruitful and meaningful participation in the sacraments.
